Southampton Community Groups come together to mark International Women’s Day

On Friday 8th March local community groups celebrated International Women’s Day with over 200 women from around the city at Newtown Youth and Community Centre.

With partner groups including the YMCA, Hampshire Constabulary, Saints Foundation, Women’s Integration Group, TUVAA, Bantaba, Unity 10, MCS and West Itchen Community Trust, the focus of the day was to empower women, promote women’s rights and celebrate the voice of women in the community. Activities included music and dance, health and fitness, beauty advice, sexual health advice and a raffle. COSMOS kindly donated a wonderful lunch.

YMCA’s Community Manager Sharlien Kennedy said, “We had such a strong response from organisations to get involved and so many people came. This event is growing from strength to strength.”

Romana Syed of Women’s Integration Group explains, “Our group has met at Ropewalk Centre offering arts and craft activities for 18 months. We provide women with a chance to socialise, learn new skills and grow in confidence. We highlight services, discuss local issues and support one another. We couldn’t be prouder to be involved.”

The celebrations included an award ceremony with Cllr Satvir Kaur presenting certificates to women who have made an outstanding contribution to our communities.
