FREE Sunday lunches in Northam: Community-building project extended into our area

‘Sunday Lunch’ is a city wide charity that provides cooked lunch for adults in Woolston and Shirley. In December, West Itchen Community Trust’s Local Conversation project and Northam Community Link partnered with them to launch one in Northam.

Starting at 12noon each Sunday at Northam Community Centre, lunches are prepared by groups of volunteers that have been in training throughout November and December. Forty three diners attended the launch by Mayor Stephen Barnes-Andrews on Sunday 6th January and a phenomenal 66 plates of African dishes were provided to 58 diners the following week.

WICT Community organiser and Sunday Lunch volunteer Abdoulie Sanneh says,

“Our aim is to bring different communities together, eat together, make new friends and together make Northam great again. The number and the diversity at the last Sunday lunch was exciting to see and hopefully it will grow over time.”

Sunday Lunch is the main funder and coordinator of the Northam Sunday Lunch project.  It is also sponsored by West Itchen Community Trust and Northam Community Link. Waitrose donate food items through the Sunday Lunch Charity.
